Family Expectations
Family Expectations
There isn’t one right answer for determining living arrangements as we age or planning options to cover the cost of those arrangements. Family dynamics, finances, personalities, obligations, and availability are some of the most significant factors to consider. Yet asking the right questions can help ease the stress for you and your family when making these decisions.
When thinking about family caretakers, you may consider: Does the family member expect to be paid or possibly receive a larger inheritance? Will the proposed care provider need to reduce their work hours? What if some children can help, but others aren’t available or willing? It’s crucial for all participating family members to fully understand the expectations before agreeing to the arrangement. Having the agreement, schedule, and responsibilities in writing can also help reduce stress and avoid confusion.
When considering personalities and opinions, will the care provider and parent be able to accept the change in roles? Do the siblings get along and cooperate well enough to work out schedules and solutions to make sure care is sufficient? And perhaps most importantly: Does the recipient really want to live with the caregiver?
It really boils down to how long or often the care recipient might be left unattended or without a system in place that allows someone to be quickly available for assistance. It’s important to consider how limited their social interactions might become. Can the recipient participate in family outings or receive company of their own?
It’s okay if you don’t know the answer to all of these questions. The important thing is to start thinking about them before a decision has to be made. Having these conversations early can give everyone involved more time to understand their options and make a plan that feels right. Our team can help guide you in the right direction and make sure the future you want is protected.
